About
What is the Product Development eXperiment (PDX)?
• A six month experiment to explore how libraries can create alternative revenue streams without increasing charges to existing customers.
Why is this being done?
• In the spirit of Te Kauroa, we need to resource experimental spaces. This project will look at the possibility of finding revenue streams to support these spaces. We would like to see these alternative revenue streams providing structured support to enable libraries to innovate and grow experimental projects without cutting into BAU services.
How will these ‘alternative revenue streams’ be built?
• The plan is to create ‘products’ derived from existing library activities, which will be re-packaged for introduction into new markets, e.g. NGO’s, local or central government agencies and businesses.
How does the PDX work?
• The PDX team will spend six months looking at the feasibility of creating and selling physical/intellectual products, based on what Auckland Libraries already does well.
• The focus for the six months is on re-packaging what is already being done, and doing some robust testing in the market. At the end of this period, the team will report back to Auckland Libraries’ leadership team, with an update on the product(s), potential/real customers, and a plan for how the experiment could become part of BAU (if that is what the business wants).
• If the PDE team finds that the idea for alternative revenue is not feasible in the context of Auckland Libraries, the experiment will be shut down, with no loss to the business or to the communities we serve.
How do I find out more about this? How can I give feedback on this?
• We will keep the Intranet page updated, including with questions we get asked. You are also welcome to email/call/kanohi ki te kanohi/tweet/IM any member of the team. Anonymous notes are perfectly welcome too.
• Our team spaces both at Central and any library we are based at are open spaces, so feel free to walk in and look through the work we will have displayed. You are welcome to leave notes/comments on our walls/tables.
• We are happy to take grouped questions, from an entire team or teams. If you would like a short meeting/presentation on our work to your team, let us know. We will answer questions to the best of our ability.
